NEW ANNUAL LEAVE AGREEMENT
On the 1 February 2004 the LAS will introduce a new annual leave agreement
after consultation with the recognised trade unions. This agreement formed part
of the Pay & Modernisation that has seen pay increase by 17% and had been in
discussions for over 2 years.
There has been some controversy over this agreement and a lot of
mis-understanding.
The following are questions that have been asked by members, we have supplied
the answers.
Q. How does the block leave work?
A. Each person is allocated a 2 week leave block for the summer period
(April to September). After the initial allocation they will
move forward by three blocks for
the next year and three blocks the year after etc. Each person can then choose
whether to take
up the allocated block, arrange to exchange their block or to request leave in
the normal way.
Q. So what do I do if I don't want the 2 week block leave allocated to me?
A. The block leave is optional, you can choose
whether to exchange your
block or to refuse it and request leave in the normal way.
Q. How do we know if the block
leave system will work?
A. Block leave is already operated at many stations and CAC successfully
within the LAS.
Q. Can individual stations 'opt
out'?
A. Under Whitley Council every member of staff is entitled to a 2 week
'summer' holiday. (Apr - Sep) so individual stations cannot opt out unless they
had a unanimous vote. (e.g.100%) This would also have to happen each year
due to new staff intakes.
Q. How does this 15% work?
A. If you book leave more than 1 month in advance then the leave entitlement
will be 15%, however if is less than 1 month notice then the existing amount of
10% will apply.
Q. Can I still get short notice
leave?
A. Yes!, you can book leave with as little as 48 hours notice as long as you
do not exceed the 10%
Q. What if I give less than 48
hours notice?
A. This will normally still be granted as long as
operational cover is not
compromised.
Q. Can I take off half a shift?
A. You can take up to 4 half shifts a year.
Q. What about lieu days?
A. Lieu days will be calculated within the 10/15%, However each complex can
take one Alternative Free Day over and above the annual leave entitlements of
either 15% or 10%.
Q. What is an Alternative Free
day?
A. If a Bank
holiday/Statutory Day coincides with a rostered day off, the day is deemed to be
a Bank Holiday/Statutory Day and an alternative rostered day off is granted.
this is known as an
Alternative Free Day.
Q. Why have UNISON accepted this agreement?
A. All 3 recognised trade unions (UNISON, GMB, TGWU) were involved in the
negotiating and acceptance of this agreement.
Q. None of the above answered my question?
A. Use our interactive question box below or
read the agreement in full.
