Unions representing nurses and health workers have today
written to Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt, calling for
urgent talks over mounting redundancies across the NHS.
Karen Jennings, Chair of the Joint Staff Side of the
Social Partnership Forum said:
"We are writing to Patricia Hewitt today calling for a
crisis meeting, because we fear that many more
redundancies are in the pipeline, which will have an
inevitable impact on patient care.
"Hardly a day goes by without the threat of more
redundancies in the NHS and we want to put forward some
positive proposals to help ease the crisis. Our members
are on the front line and they tell us that you cannot
have constant change in the NHS without it causing
instability.
"It is time to slow down and take stock because we are
particularly worried that none of the Trusts that have
announced redundancies over the past weeks have
turnaround teams in place. It is therefore very likely
that we will have more bad news from those 18 Trusts*
with the worst deficits and the Government must take
action to stop this jobs cull.
"The Government must face up to its responsibilities.
Itıs lack of evidence based policy making is undermining
the stability of the NHS and fuelling the deficit
crisis.²
"Our trade unions collectively make up the vast majority
of staff working in the NHS and our membership
undoubtedly has a shared investment in making a success
of the modernisation of the health service, the reforms
and in retaining public confidence."
