  Violence at Work

A memorandum of understanding has been agreed between the Crown Prosecution Service (‘CPS’) and the NHS Security Management Service (‘NHS SMS’) to ensure the effective prosecution of cases involving violence and abuse (whether physical, verbal or sexual and including assaults which are religiously or racially motivated) against any member of ‘NHS staff’. Current sentencing practice indicates that custody is the appropriate starting point for a person who assaults a public servant. The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) have also committed to a memorandum of understanding with the NHS SMS. Nobody will argue that this is actually happening of course in fact only a small fraction of the assaults we suffer ever make it into court. Why? In my opinion two reasons:
1. Lack of commitment/resources from the LAS to pursue those responsible combined with a lack of care towards those that have been assaulted. (A part - time Security Manager to support 3000 staff!).
2. The fact that most of us are unaware that every assault should be reported to the Police and that they have a duty and the powers to prosecute via the courts.

It is Not Part of the Job.
